Unit 2
Magnetism
Natural Magnets
Magnet:
Is a piece of metal (mainly iron) has the ability to attract objects made of iron and steel
e.g. – Carpenters use a magnet to collect nails that fall on the floor
[- Tailors use a magnet to collect needles and pins

Types of Magnet:
1- Natural Magnet: It is made of an iron ore called magnetite
2- Artificial Magnet ( A man-made magnet) : It is made by a man from iron and steel
Discovery of Natural Magnet:
1- It was discovered by a Greek shepherd about 2500 years ago in the region of Magnesia in Asia Minor (Turkey)
2- He noticed that a black stone was stuck to his iron stick
3- Later, it was found that the black stone had the ability to attract objects made of iron
4- They called the black stone magnet after the name of its district Magnesia.

Shapes of Magnet:
1- Bar Magnet.
2- Magnetic needle
3- Horse-shoemagnet
4- U-shaped Magnet.
5- Magnetic Compass
Magnetic Substances:
Are the substances which can be attracted by magnet.
Examples: Iron – Steel – Cobalt – Nickel (such as nail, pins and paper clips

Non-Magnetic Substances:
Are the substances which can not be attracted by magnet.
Examples: Chalk – Copper – Wood – Aluminum
Are the substances which can not be attracted by magnet.

Magnetic Pole:
Is the area of a magnet that attracts most of the iron filings or nails
Or It is the area of magnet where the attraction of iron filings or nails is greatest.
Each magnet has two poles, One at each end
